Golden Glover - Not Your Average
Cow Puncher
Dec. 1997
Ronnie Glover of Elgin, Oklahoma, has made quite a name for himself
in cattle circles as an outstanding operator. His operations range from
club calves to purebred black Maine Anjou. He has commercial cattle,
big name bulls like Pay Off and Pistol Pete, and numerous yearlings
on summer grass and wheat pasture.
One might think
that he would be too busy to tackle much else, but this is not the case.
Glover has
taken on distribution of SweetPro lick blocks after rigorously testing
them on his own 450 cow herd and several hundred yearlings on grass.
He demonstrated
first to himself that SweetPro's cost-cutting claims of improved feed
efficiency were true. He also showed his company that SweetPro block
could compete with range cubes and beat them, despite the comparitively
low cost of range cubes.
Glover approached
the use of the lick blocks from a producer's vantage point, comparing
the costs of putting out range cubes daily to the costs of putting SweetPro
blocks out weekly.
Glover appreciated
the savings on labor and reduced wear-and-tear on equipment, but his
first priority was on performance.
His test proved
that the overall improvement in forage utilization offset any benefits
of feeding several pounds of cubes. Cattle simply got more value out
of the grass; one pound of SweetPro lick block replaced 3.5 to 4 pounds
of range cubes, with no reduction in performance.
In fact, rate
of gain improved slightly while the day-cost of supplement dropped 10
cents per head. Glover added the labor saving benefits to the reduction
in daily expenses and improvements on gain while assessing the value
of the SweetPro lick block.
Glover had
spent 30 cents per head per day on the range cubes. His day-cost for
SweetPro blocks was 20 cents per head. The cattle's rate of gain improved
from 1.85 pounds per day to 1.95 pounds per day. He also observed a
general improvement in herd health.
Glover is now
a successful SweetPro distributor. This may be because he approaches
distribution as he does his cattle operations Ð seeking quality and
economy, with a willingness to work hard.
Perhaps he
does it by pumping all the time he saves by using SweetPro blocks into
distributing them. Whatever the ingredients are, they have combined
to put him at the top in sales. He sells an average of 10 to 12 semi-trucks
full of SweetPro lick blocks per month.
